MY VERY FIRST CAR

Post by LordJellybelly » Fri Jan 25, 2019 2:19 pm

It was a white 1952 Rover 75 with an additional headlight in the centre of the radiator grill. Khaki leather interior and a three speed column change free wheel gearbox. Became an insurance write off when it was hit by a lorry whilst parked. Image

My father owned a Rover 90 in the early 60s. I used to think it was the bees knees at the time, especially when the speedo was showing 90mph on the M1.

I'm not really into older cars, but I think even today that model has some presence and is one of the few older cars I'd consider owning.

Have a look at my thread about how much has mpg advanced over the years. Can you remember what mpg the Rover achieved and what did you think of the freewheel facility ?

My first car was a pink 1960s Vauxhall Cresta. There's a story behind this - too long to go into now cos I have to cook our dinner, but I didn't have it long.
Still can't insert pics here, but click on the link and you'll see pics similar to the one I had. :D

1st - W reg Ford Escort Mk2 Estate with square headlights, in red, bought off my grandad for £400
2nd - R reg Ford Escort Mk2 saloon with round headlights, 7 different colours (another story), bought off a mate for £75 and sold 3 years later for £50, only ever replacing a head gasket and exhaust. And I got £500 from insurance legal claim when someone wrote it off whilst parked in the street. Now that is good depreciation! Who ever made money on a car?
3rd - M reg 1.2 Vauxhall Corsa 1.2 LS in turquoise
4th - P reg 1.4i Vauxhall Corsa SRi in black - my first NEW car and my first PCP!
5th - T reg 1.6 VW Golf S in black - NEW - not bad but a bit bland
6th - V reg 1.6 VW Golf SE - NEW - horrendous with rattles, squeaks and bits falling off. Tried to reject but ended up trading in for...
7th - X reg 2.0 VW Golf GTi - NEW - Great car. I Kevved it up with fat pipes, lowered suspension and aftermarket alloys!
8th - 03 plate 2.0TDi Audi A3 - NEW - Great! I loved this car and only got rid of it as I needed a 5 door due to family illness.
9th - 55 plate 2.0TDi Audi A3 Sportback - NEW - This is probably my favourite car ever (I kept it for 10 years).
10th - 15 plate 1.4TFSi Audi A3 Sportback - NEW - Another great car, but I always wished I had kept the old one...until...
11th - 2019 68 plate 1.5 TFSi Skoda Kodiaq - NEW - Not necessarily my favourite car ever, as this would be between my second Audi and my second Ford Escort. However, it is by far the BEST and most practical car I have ever owned.

I hope this was of interest to someone. Great thread.

Matt
Ordered in September 2018; collected 18th December. 1.5TSi ACT DSG Edition in Black Magic (the one true colour!) with Virtual Pedal. What a beast!! Why did I waste 20 years of hard earned cash on Audis?

I'll be interested to see Colin Lamberts list if he has the time.

I thought I'd had a few cars until I read that he's had 70 odd  :D

My first 2 cars (at 17) were 1934 Morris TWO SEATER (very rare) Convertibles. They were both very tired. one lasted 2 weeks and was cannibalised to keep the other running.
Then third was a green Rover 12 1497cc OHV 4th (at 18) was 1947 black rover 16 2250cc straight 6 (see below) both with freewheel and drivers 'lazy window' ( long arm instead of winder which raised or lowered the window in one movement.) Lovely big back seats. Big enough for all sorts of activities!! ;) ;) Both with opening windscreens and sun rooves. '47 16 had rod brakes which were useless, The freewheel nearly killed me and my girlfriend. With no engine braking the brakes did not stop me and I narrowly missed a terminal head on accident. I pulled into the nearest lay-by, opened the under dash tool kit and cut the freewheel cable with the pliers to ensure I never had another 'kacking' incident!!
After that I had many cars........ The Kodiaq being my 75th car and the Karoq the 76th.
