The best and worst car thread

Post by Lord Muck » Thu Nov 30, 2017 7:37 pm

It’s a simple thread..

You favourite car and worst you’ve owned.. Kodiaq not included.

My favourite has to be the Mini Cooper Convertible Diesel. It’s a hoot to drive and the BMW Diesel engine is a peach loads of torque and power. Handling is spot on and it feels solid all round. I’m also someone who likes to tinker and there are lots of farkles on line...

My most hated was a Vauxhall Zafirs B I wished the bloody thing had caught fire. 3 years old and the heater kept blowing the solenoid, steering wheel controls failed, 2xDPF failures. Rear light cluster kept filling with water. Handles and trim kept falling apart... it was a bag of bolts.
1.4TSI Kodiaq SE 4x4 7 seats manual.. build week 23 5/6/17
Extras are window blinds, driver mode, colour computer, reversing camera and a spare wheel.

I swear way too much, apparently the use of colourful metaphors is frowned on in polite society!

Good thread!

Favourite I can't decide. Vauxhall Cavalier SRi or Audi A3 (old shape). Both handled brilliantly, had plenty of power, refinement and reliability.

Worst would be the 1998 Ford Escort. Fixed Or Repaired Daily as the acronym goes. And not exactly an awesome drive either.

Good fun,

My best was a red Ford Capri GT Mk1, so comfortable to drive, I could drive from North Germany to the Channel ports and then onto Glasgow in one journey.

My worst a Simca 1100 which would stop dead in heavy rain.

Best Car
Ford XC Fairmont 351ci V8 3 speed auto, 4-barrel Holly carb, ratchet style shifter (early tiptronic) 14 inch mags and vinyl covered roof. American muscle in a car that did actually go around corners quite well.

Worst car
Mitsubishi Eterna
Asthmatic 2.0 l Turbo. Always seem to have a 3 hour existentialist discussion about whether a corner did exist and whether we really needed to go around it. (Massive under-steer.)

I did probably spend more time fixing the Fairmont, but the Mitsubishi had it problems and this is the emotional memory thing not a reliability contest. :D

Can't really pin down the worst. I have had 72 cars and so many of them have had bad faults, Some that spring to mind are 1947 Rover 16 useless rod brakes, nearly killed me, Ford Corsair V4 would never start on a cold wet morning. 1979 1.6 Capri L dreadful seats, collapsed within 4k miles. 2X Avenger 1300, gutless, cr@p seats.
Best excluding K without doubt any of my 3 Yetis. brilliant roadholding good mpg, good performance, brilliant seats.

My (other? - its here but out of use) car - a 2003 Volkswagen Passat Sport TDi 130bhp 4motion Estate.

I've had it since new and it has been absolutely great. Sadly it has a gearbox fault which isn't now economic to fix.

I've only ever owned 2 cars beside the K. Love(d) them both, but then I am easily pleased.
  1. 1993 VW polo 1.3 genesis.
  2. 2006 Honda Civic 2.2 CTDi.
I still have the Honda. Still drive the Honda (for many reasons) rather than the K.
I vote the Honda as my best car. That diesel engine just purrs on the A roads and motorways. On my 4th windscreen and 2nd wiper motor, but other than that just the usual tyres and brakes had to be replaced.
Yep, 11 years on and still on the original exhaust.

Funny anecdote about the VW polo:
After we had an after-market immobiliser installed, when the engine was still warm from before (e.g. stopping over for a rest) then you'd have to smack the steering column underneath to get it started again. While uttering the words "Start, you bastard!".

May have made that last bit up. But not the smacking. There'll be a law against that one day.

Edit:
In another post I mention that I have owned 4 card. To clarify; the other two belonged to the missus and I was a named driver on them. I don't count these as I hardly ever drove these and should therefore not consider these for this thread.
