I'm a bit old fashioned insofar as it doesn't matter whether your car is a £250 rusty runaround or a £90k Porsche......they share one common theme and that is those four bits of rubber are all that keep you in contact with the road.

So I just thought, the wider the better. But obviously not doing something that won't work or is dangerous. My current Focus ST3 is running on 235 19s and that weighs a hell of a lot less than my incoming Kodiaq VRS :)
The logical answer would be yes, the wider the tyre, the more rubber in contact with the surface, but it isn't that simple. As a tyre gets wider, the footprint of the tyre changes. While the footprint does get wider, it also gets shorter, and how the tyre changes under camber and load is altered too. This in turn changes the dynamics of the car. On a 8” rim, going 255 is a very bad idea, your sidewalk flex is gonna be rubbish and the car won’t feel sharp as a result. Expect more wear too. You’ll also need to tell your insurer, and there’s a chance they’ll tell you you won’t be covered.
Footprint will of course also depend on tyre pressure, particularly how short or not it is.

Hey there. As the new release of the FY20 Kodiaq, the tire size on the 20" wheel is now 255/40-20. The VRS wheels looks the same.... What's the verdict? :D

The XTREME rim has no change - still 235/45R20 for a 8” wide rim. The new IGNITE rims are an 8.5” wide rim.

Great Zach, thx for your reply.

Im already looking for new tires... and there is no selection in the 235/45 segment. As it looks now, I will go for 245/40... coz the variety in that case is much bigger in terms of different tires.

But could use some ideas from your side.

Cheers

Greetings,

I' bought kodiaq 2018, also I would like to change the wheel rim to 20"

But in my country not available the 234/45/20

Do you think

235/55/20

Or

245/50/20

Will fit?

245/40 would be fine, however ring your insurer as that won't be an OEM fitment.

In the UK any wheel that is not factory fitted usually needs reporting to the insurer irrespective of origin. Indeed when I switch back to the factory fitted wheels from snow chain wheels my insurer requires that I tell them even though it has a zero cost.
