Winter tyres and rims

Post by marzipan71 » Mon Jan 07, 2019 8:54 pm

Hi - we live in Italy and we're looking to get hold of a set of winter tyres for those trips up to the Alps (hopefully) in our Kodiaq. The consensus seems to be that its best to get a set of tyres and rims and just swap these out (as per advice in the Skoda brochure 'Winter Complete Wheels'). We have a 1/2017 Kodiaq Style Berlina 4x4 190hp diesel, which is a great car. It has the 19" Triglav alloys. My question is this - I've never bought winter tyres before, and I want to know if I can get a set of cheaper 17" steel (maybe?) rims or am I locked in to the 19" rims for some reason? The Skoda 'Winter Complete Wheels' brochure with all the various combos seems to suggest that the only suitable combination for the 4x4 is the 19" alloys with Bridgestone Blizzak LM-25's. Should I just go with these, via the dealer, or is it worth doing more research in an effort to save some dosh. Thanks for your help!

You’re not locked in to 19” rims for the winters. You can do 18” or 17”. I have the 19” Alloys for summer and a set of 18” for winter. The height of the tire is different for each so it maintains the same circumference of the wheel, i.e. 235/50 tire for 19” and 235/55 for 18”.
Kodiaq 2.0 TSI Style, Business Grey, and pretty much every option except for panoramic roof.

215x65x17 is a recommended size for the Kodiaq and is the only size suitable if you need to fit snow chains. Here in the UK dealers will happily sell you 17” steel rims, but a lot of people order wheel and tyre packages from Mytyres ( Delticom )which are based in Germany and ship worldwide I believe.
I have 17” black alloys for my winter tyres.

Candy White 2.0 TSi SE L 7 seat. Heated windscreen/ nozzles, kids pack, front rear parking sensors, reversing camera and spare wheel, Milotec rear bumper inserts.
And for the winter months: 17” Black alloys with 215x65x17 Nokian WR SUV3 winter tyres.

Thanks v much folks for these replies, very helpful. I checked out mytyres (gommadiretto.it here in Italy) and selecting the vehicle type etc they offer me 17" steel rims with a range of tyres. I've done some research on the various tyres and think I'll for the Goodyear UltraGrip Performance GEN-1 symbol M + S, SUV 215/65 R17 99W which seem to offer a balance between price & performance. Gommadiretto supply the complete wheel within 10 business days for a fairly low postage rate.

Thanks again for your replies!

I can definitely recommend the Goodyear Ultragrip. I have the fitted to my BMW 5 series and they are excellent in the winter. Excellent grip in wet or snow
Ordered in September 18. Kodiaq Sportline 190 TDI DSG 4x4. Black Magic. Panoramic roof. Dynamic chassis control. Digital Instrument display. Canton stereo. Heated windscreen and steering wheel. Area view and lots of other bits and pieces.
