I use Andoid Auto on my OnePlus 3 with a sideloaded APK since it isn't officially available here in Sweden. It works fine, but I don't like how you can't seem to disable the default widgets. (Shared Spotify account with wife, if she's playing music and I plug in my phone, then her stream gets interrupted and is transferred to the car instead)

I usually hook up my iPhone with Car Play though, and then have Waze running on my Andoid phone at the same time. Usually just use Car Play for calls and podcasts, but Apple Maps can be handy in unfamiliar places since, unlike Waze, it can tell me which lane I should be on.

Android Auto currently requires a USB connection, although Android Auto over Bluetooth is apparently in the offing.
Bluetooth connection has Just been launched in North America. The required hardware is very specific though, suggesting that it would take more than a software update in your ICE to make it work.

My Android Auto never seems to find a GPS signal after I plug it in. I select "home" or "work" but even after my 30 mile commute the Android Auto screen is still dancing about trying to find the GPS. Google maps on my phone works absolutely fine straight away. Anyone any ideas???

Turn off any energy saving features that your android phone has.

Does your Android Auto app have 'location' permission enabled?

I'm using android auto fine on my pixel, it looks good in 1080 mode. It allows me to use stitcher for my podcasts whilst using Google assistant and Waze for navigation.
The new version of android auto has been released which supports wireless but due to the data requirements its over localised WiFi hot-spot not Bluetooth and requires compatible head unit, not sure yet if columbus will be able to support it via a firmware update or we'll need a hardware swap to use it. Personally I find the cable fine and only use it for motorway trips.
