Oh dear, the end result was particularly unsuccessful. The key still unlocks the doors if I touch them, but now it no longer starts the car.
I wish I'd just left it alone now :(
Guess I'll just have to stump up for a new key.

Looks like I was being overly dramatic. I had to synchronise the 'dead' key properly - it is now no worse than it was before, though perhaps slightly cleaner on the inside! (i.e. buttons don't work, but can open the car by touching handle and it starts the car too).
