Hi Folks, new to this forum. I took delivery of my new Kodiaq last Friday. Can anyone please recommend a good roof box? It needs to be a big one as we have 4 kids. Thanks, Ray

Do you intend to carry anything else on the roof at the same time? e.g. a bike? if yes, look at the thule motion sport ones.

if you don't need to fit anything beside it, look at the wider non-sport ones, as you will likely find the wider ones will fit a wider variety of shapes/suitcases etc.

in the "normal" thule range, they have the motion and the touring ranges. the motion range is more expensive, but will take 75kg, while the touring only takes 50kg.

if you have 4 kids, you probably want one of the heavier duty motion models. something around 500 Litres, like the Thule Motion XT XL (if you don't want to carry a bike next to it). I highly recommend looking 2nd hand as there are usually a lot out there that are heavily discounted and barely used - but steer clear of the ones that obviously weren't stored carefully. I'm not sure where you are. The Motion XT XL replaced the Motion 800 in some markets, so look out for these if looking 2nd hand. I have an even older version of this, the Thule Atlantis 780, which is a bit smaller at 480 Litres**. The "200" sized Thule roof boxes are slightly smaller again, a lot shorter - but a bit wider than some boxes, so may fit some suitcases that mine won't.

if you want to go for max size, you could look at the Motion XXL (previously called the motion 900 here), which is over 600 Litres, but you could run into tailgate clearance issues as the largest thule is over 230cm long, and protrudes closer to the rear of the vehicle. Do you have the electric tailgate? If so, you might be able to set the opening height to be lower (if there are clearance issues). i think you'll find the 500 litre boxes big enough, and those XXL boxes can look a bit ridiculous.

Also consider yakima, as they have a very good range too.

having said all this, i have not yet confirmed that i have no tailgate clearance issues with my 197cm long thule roof box. I won't know until the car arrives and I have sourced a roof rack. the Motion XT XL is 215cm long, so could have clearance issues on the kodiaq. In size and age, the Motion 800 is in between my Atlantis 780 and the current Motion XT XL - so the 205cm long motion 800 could well be the goldilocks size for the kodiaq.

**Note: you might notice some not-quite-intuitive volumes on the thule models, as you look further back at older models. it seems that they started a different approach to measuring it a few years back, so that newer models have lower rated volumes than older comparable-sized models. Even though my "480 Litre" altantis is smaller on all dimensions than a newer Motion 800, the Motion 800 is quoted as having less volume (460 litres).

I am not sure there are any roof-boxes on the market that you can fit 4 kids in to :D :D . I have a roof-box but we only use this for the Mother In Law :D :D :D

Hi sclyde2, many thanks for your very informative email. I never considered the 2nd hand option but definitely will now. I currently don't plan to carry a bike on the roof so will probably go for a wider box. Although in saying that I have the panoramic sunroof so don't want to block out all the light either. I'll have to give it some consideration. I'm in Ireland. Cheers, Ray

We have a Thule Pacific 200 and have just returned from holiday after using it. Plenty of room for all our luggage and we have three kids.
Thanks

I'm looking at the Thule Motion XT XL (500 litres and 215cm long) and the XXL (610 litres and a whopping 232cm long).

Do any fellow Skodiaq owners have one of these boxes and, if so, are you happy with your purchase? Is boot door clearance an issue with the XXL for example? This could probably be worked around by adjusting boot opening height if necessary I guess but not sure that necessary to go there. XXL is also significantly more expensive/slightly larger to store so erring towards the XL for now.

Thanks in advance.

Has anyone fitted the Thule Motion XT XXL to their Kodiaq and does it cause problems with boot?

Thanks

Thanks Zach - you've got the XL or just think best option cost/size-wise?
My dealer recommended the XL over the XXL as the XXL is too long for the car. On a Passat Alltrack (4.8m car!) the front is parallel to the top of the windshield, and the boot lid opens fully with a few inches gap between it and the XXL.

Thanks Zach, that's great intel! XL it is and that seems to be a sweet spot for price and size.
