Navigation and route options

Guys,
Can't seem to get the settings right in the nav system. All I want to do is stick to Motor Ways, A roads and B roads when I travel making use of the nav system. I don't want to cut across country going down narrow country lanes while en-route to make the journey shorter, just want to stick to Motor Ways, A & B roads, apart from end of journey when it maybe necessary to go off piste (so to speak) to reach final destination. Any ideas on the best settings, Thanks.

Hugh,
Thanks for that. I am currently using the single route option/display, so will go back to those settings. I was using the three route option before but gave up on it. However I don't think I ever chose the "Red Route". In the settings I have the trailer ticked, (although no towing equipment fitted) thought that would keep me off the narrow lanes. But am I correct in saying that setting has no impact on route as I don't any towing equipment on car?

If you're not towing, have "include trailer" unticked. With "suggest 3 alternative routes" enabled, the nav will give you the choice of three routes each time.

Green is eco. I've not really tried that
Red is fastest. It will generally stick to major roads and is the one to use.
Orange is shortest by distance and will generally pick a really stupid route.

So you need to pick Red or Green to get it to use the biggest roads. However it's only as good as its map data, which in my experience is not the best, so it will still try to put you down narrow roads and dirt tracks occasionally.

In my opinion, Google and Apple Maps are far better and produce quicker more reliable routes.

Mr. Trilby,

Thanks for that. I will uncheck the towing box. I will stick to red route from now on. Hopefully avoid the annoying short cut, cross country routes that I was having crop up, when the sat nav would decide to take a rat run between two major roads to save a few miles.

Hi Rodger.. this used to drive mentals :x  They put the same sat Nav in Golf. It would calculate the best route.. delete it and invent the 3 most stupid route possible. Always the same. It would try to navigate form one major city to another the entire way by use of single track roads only.. dragging exhaust along the ground as I went and through deep fords that would surely kill me until i'm dead! When I traded in for Kodiaq i was please SE came without it. Apple car play is much better. I gave up on apple Maps pretty fast as It doesn't work offline but Google maps works great and is far better than the VW/Skoda system.. No more chewing the steering wheel in anger

On a related point does anyone know how you can see the instructions step by step for a given route before or even after selecting it ?
Thanks
I haven't looked in detail whether there is a view with ALL the instructions for the route,, but know off the top of my head that if you select "Split Screen" mode in the viewing options it will then bring up a list of the next couple of turn instructions overlayed on top of the map.

Yes thanks for that. And yes its been driving me crazy, my previous Insignia was so much more user friendly. Think I am going to use google or possibly Waze which a friend recommended.
